The Importance of Understanding Your Natural Undertone for Hair Color

Have you ever felt like a hair color looked amazing in a photo but just didn’t seem to work for you in real life? The secret often lies in your skin undertone. Choosing the right hair color isn’t just about following trends; it’s about harmony. When your hair and clothing work with your natural undertone, your face looks healthier, more vibrant, and you can get away with less makeup while still looking your best.

How to Find Your Undertone

Here are two simple at-home tests:

1. The Vein Test
Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist.

  • Greenish veins → warm undertone

  • Bluish or purplish veins → cool undertone

  • Hard to tell? You may have a neutral undertone

2. The White Cloth Test
Hold a pure white cloth next to your face.

  • Skin looks yellow or golden → warm undertone

  • Skin looks pink or bluish → cool undertone

These quick checks can point you in the right direction for flattering hair and clothing colors.

Why Professional Color Analysis Matters

If you want a deeper evaluation, consider a professional color analysis. I had one done myself and, even with my training in color theory, I learned so much! Most systems use a 12-season palette. I’m a “late fall,” which means rich jewel tones work best for me. I also learned not to go too light or too dark with my hair for the most balanced look.

In the salon, I often use my extension swatches to show clients how different tones affect their skin. It’s always eye-opening to see how the wrong shade can make skin look dull, while the right one instantly brightens the face.

Why This Matters

Choosing color is about more than just photos or trends. The wrong shade may force you to wear more makeup to look healthy. The right one? It feels effortless.

If you’re curious about going deeper, I highly recommend checking out Francynelle at Libellule Institute right here in Matthews. She is right here in the same building as Haven Holistic Salon. She’s who I used for my color analysis, and she’s phenomenal. Plus, this makes an amazing gift idea for the holidays!
